Curated 365: Robert Glasper - Why We Speak ft. Q-Tip & Esperanza Spalding
Speaking the truth in your own language.
Black Radio is an ambitious project. The series, started by Robert Glasper and already ten years old, features some of the most influential artists of contemporary black music and beyond. The pianist, composer, songwriter, and producer has spent the past decade pushing the boundaries of jazz music, blending its traditional elements with elements of hip-hop, R&B, and improvisation. A decade after releasing his first Black Radio album, he is back with another genre-defying and collaborative album, featuring 13 tracks that flow seamlessly together.
"Why We Speak" is a jazzy and multi-lingual track featuring Esperanza Spalding and Q-Tip. The production is not over-complicated with the Hammond organ kicking it off with the loop. Combined with the elegant guitar, Esperanza seamlessly switches between French, English, and Spanish in her verses, highlighting the importance of language and communication. The song is more than just a musical affair. It's a powerful message about the importance of speaking one's truth and not selling one's soul in the process. Q-Tip's abstract lyrics add depth to the track, reminding us that, ultimately, the truth is what brings us to our true selves.
The track's lyric video adds to the overall experience with its creative use of movie titles and a spinning record. Overall, "Why We Speak" is an engaging and thought-provoking track that showcases the talents of both Esperanza Spalding and Q-Tip, and encourages listeners to reflect on the power of language and self-expression.
